Overview

Looking for an unforgettable day trip from Meknes to Rabat? Follow in the footsteps of Morocco’s glorious kings on this private full-day excursion from Meknes — one of Morocco’s four imperial cities — to Rabat, the elegant capital of the kingdom.

After breakfast, your professional driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Meknes and drive you comfortably to Rabat via the highway. Rabat’s wide, well-organized boulevards make it one of Morocco’s most relaxed and pleasant cities to explore — a welcome contrast to the labyrinthine medinas of Fes or Marrakech, and the perfect destination for a Meknes to Rabat day tour.

Throughout the day, you will discover Rabat’s most iconic landmarks: the UNESCO-listed Hassan Tower, the magnificent Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the atmospheric Kasbah of the Udayas perched over the crashing Atlantic, and the haunting ancient ruins of Chellah. You will also drive past the Royal Palace and explore both Rabat’s elegant French-influenced modern district and its historic medina — home to the most orderly and walkable streets of any old city in Morocco.

This is a comfortable, private tour covering approximately 320 km round trip, and lasting 10 to 12 hours depending on your departure time — the earlier you start, the more time you’ll have at each site. At every major stop, you have the freedom to explore independently or hire a local guide for a deeper experience.

Unlike Morocco’s more chaotic imperial cities, Rabat is a pleasure to navigate. Its modern infrastructure, coastal setting, and blend of royal heritage and French colonial architecture make it one of the most rewarding and photogenic destinations in the country — and one of the best day trips from Meknes you can take.

Whether you’re a history lover, a culture seeker, or a photography enthusiast, this Rabat excursion from Meknes perfectly blends royal heritage, Atlantic coastal beauty, ancient ruins, and vibrant Moroccan culture into one seamless, memorable day.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Kasbah of the Udayas involves uneven cobblestone paths, and Chellah requires walking through open ruins and gardens.

Itinerary

Morning : Departure from Meknes

Your private driver will pick you up after breakfast at your accommodation in Meknes at an agreed time. You’ll hit the highway and head directly to Rabat, arriving within approximately 1.5 hours.

Stop 1 : Hassan Tower & Mausoleum of Mohammed V

Begin your royal journey at one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks. The Hassan Tower, commissioned in 1199 by the Almohad king Yacub al-Mansour, was intended to be the world’s largest mosque. A devastating earthquake left only 200 columns standing — yet the site remains a symbol of Moroccan power and ambition for over 800 years. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site. Just beside it stands the ornately decorated Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the revered grandfather of the current king and the founding father of modern Morocco. Both sites can be visited with or without a local guide.

Stop 2 : Kasbah of the Oudayas

Drive to this fortified Atlantic neighbourhood, perched dramatically over the crashing waves of the ocean since 1269. A maze of narrow blue-and-white streets, ancient stone houses, picturesque doorways, and breathtaking ocean views — the Oudaya Kasbah earned its UNESCO status not only for its rich history but for its extraordinary Mediterranean beauty. A perfect spot for photography and peaceful walking. Guide optional.

Midday : Lunch

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at a welcoming local restaurant in Rabat, offering a rich menu of Moroccan and international dishes.

Stop 3 : Chellah

Step into one of the most atmospheric ancient sites in all of Morocco. Chellah began as a Roman port city, became a Moorish outpost, and later transformed into a fortified medieval necropolis. Its winding ruins, overgrown gardens, and crumbling minarets create a hauntingly beautiful setting — today famously colonized by families of nesting white storks. A must-see for history lovers and photographers alike. Guide optional.

Stop 4 : Royal Palace

Drive past and admire the grandeur of the Royal Palace of Rabat. If accompanied by a local guide, access to the public section of the palace grounds is possible.

Stop 5 : Rabat New & Old City

Discover Rabat’s elegant new city, designed by French architects during the Protectorate era (1912–1956). The modern centre is home to the Bank of Morocco, the Postal Museum, and Saint Peter’s Cathedral, all connected by a sleek tram network. Adjacent to this, explore Rabat’s old medina — built over centuries atop a Roman settlement, its streets are the straightest and most orderly of any medina in Morocco. End the afternoon browsing the vibrant souks and the historic Street of Consuls.

Evening : Return to Meknes

After a rich day of discovery, your driver will take the highway directly back to your accommodation in Meknes.
